Day 2: Etna - roof of sicily and the precious Catania | 28 km
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey to the majestic slopes of Mount Etna, Europe's highest volcano, on the first day of cycling! Despite its imposing presence and occasional eruptions, Sicilians have a complex relationship with "their" volcano, both fearing and appreciating its fertile lava slopes, which have historically attracted dense settlements.
Your adventure begins with a scenic bus ride, ascending higher and higher on a winding road, offering breathtaking views of the coast and the city of Catania below. Upon reaching an altitude of nearly 1,900 meters, you'll embark on a brief hike along younger craters, traversing volcanic ash and witnessing the remnants of past eruptions.
Once atop the mountain, prepare to coast down on your bike along a well-maintained road, crossing several lava flows as you marvel at the barren yet captivating landscape. Don't forget to bundle up warmly for the chilly descent, especially in spring when hats and gloves are often recommended!
After an exhilarating ride, enjoy a delicious picnic in the tranquil surroundings of an old pine forest, weather permitting (additional cost). Then, you'll have the option to continue cycling for another 10 kilometers through charming settlements at the foot of Mount Etna or return to the hotel via bus. In the late afternoon, embark on a cultural excursion to the nearby city of Catania, where your knowledgeable city guide will lead you on a captivating tour of its baroque center, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the iconic Elephant Fountain on Piazza del Duomo and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Catania's bustling squares. Indulge in Sicilian delicacies like marzipan and granita as you explore the city's vibrant streets, and conclude your evening with a delicious meal at a traditional restaurant in the heart of Catania's old town.
